A 13-year-old boy riding a motorized scooter to school Monday morning was struck by a small SUV turning into a school parking lot near West 143rd Street and Mission Road in Leawood.
The crash happened at approximately 7:35 a.m. on Aug. 17, as the boy traveled westbound on the sidewalk along 143rd Street, according to a news release from Leawood Police Chief Brad Robbins, reported by the Johnson County Post. The driver of the eastbound SUV hit the boy as the vehicle turned into the entrance of the Prairie Star school campus, which houses both an elementary and middle school in the Blue Valley School District.
"Fortunately, the boy was wearing a helmet and was alert and talking when the first officer arrived," Robbins said in the release. "Leawood Fire and Johnson County MedAct provided initial care before he was transported to a local hospital for further treatment."
First responders reported the boy sustained injuries to his arms, legs and torso, according to KCTV5. He was conscious and talking at the scene.
Robbins said in the release that the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators.
The crash remains under investigation by the Leawood Police Department.
Aug. 17 marked the start of the first full week of the 2026-27 school year for most Johnson County students, including those in the Blue Valley district. Prairie Star Middle School Principal Eric Rembold sent a message to families that morning explaining why emergency personnel were on campus during arrival and noting that counselors were available for students.
The crash is the second time in less than a year that a child on an electric scooter has been struck by a vehicle in Leawood. In October 2025, 10-year-old Duke Ommert was killed after a driver hit him near West 103rd Street and Lee Boulevard while he rode an e-scooter. Following Ommert's death, the city lowered the speed limit on that stretch of Lee Boulevard from 35 to 30 mph, and parents pushed for additional safety measures including adding a sidewalk.
Multiple Johnson County cities have adopted scooter and e-bike rules over the past year, including requiring young riders to wear helmets, the Johnson County Post reported.
The boy's condition has not been updated. Anyone with information about the crash can contact the Leawood Police Department's non-emergency line at (913) 266-0696 or email [email protected].
