Two Election Day polling places at Resurrection Church are moving because U.S. Senate candidate Adam Hamilton works there as pastor.

Johnson County Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt announced the changes Monday, Sept. 28, saying the church qualifies as Hamilton's "place of business." Hamilton founded the congregation in 1990 and still leads it. The church, formerly known as Church of the Resurrection, recently rebranded to Resurrection Church and remains one of the largest United Methodist congregations in the country.

"The polling places mentioned in the press release were changed because they serve as the place of business of a candidate appearing on the ballot," an election office spokesperson told Fox 4.

In a press release, Schmidt said the move was to avoid having voting at what the county considers Hamilton's place of business, the Johnson County Post reported.

No public statement from Hamilton or his campaign about the polling place changes appeared in available records as of Sept. 30.

Here's what affected voters need to know:

Leawood campus (near 135th and Roe): Voters assigned to Resurrection Church's flagship location will now cast ballots at Congregation Beth Torah, 6100 W. 127th St. in Overland Park.

Olathe campus: Voters assigned to Resurrection Church West will now go to Christ Community Church of the Nazarene, 21385 College Blvd. in Olathe.

Both changes apply only to Election Day voting on Tuesday, Nov. 3. The affected church campuses are not early voting sites. Advance in-person voting begins Saturday, Oct. 17, and runs through noon Monday, Nov. 2. Advance mail ballots begin shipping Wednesday, Oct. 14.

A release from the Johnson County Election Office said affected voters will receive a mailed notification with their new polling place. Polls on Election Day are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Hamilton, a Democrat, is challenging Republican incumbent Sen. Roger Marshall. An Emerson College/Nexstar Media poll published Sept. 18 showed Hamilton leading 45% to 43%. Kansans have not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1932, the Johnson County Post reported.
