An 80-year-old Independence, Missouri, man died Saturday afternoon after his truck left the road on westbound Interstate 435 in Leawood.
The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the driver as Samuel Martin Franks. According to the KHP crash log, Franks was driving a 2019 Honda Ridgeline west on I-435 when the vehicle ran off the road to the right at milepost 76.9, about two-tenths of a mile east of Mission Road.
The crash was reported just after 3:40 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3.
Franks' truck entered the right ditch, struck a crash attenuator and continued westbound before hitting a sign post and coming to rest in the north ditch, according to the patrol's report. A crash attenuator is a cushion barrier that absorbs impact energy when vehicles leave the roadway, as Fox 4 reported.
No other vehicles were involved.
Franks was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to KHP. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:26 p.m., and his body was transported to the Johnson County Medical Examiner's Office.
The KHP crash log says Franks left the roadway for an unknown reason. The log noted no hit-and-run and no police pursuit. Anyone with information about the crash can contact the Kansas Highway Patrol.
