Blue Valley Northwest rolled past Blue Valley West 56-35 on Friday, Sept. 25, turning senior night at The Pound into a lopsided win.
The Huskies scored on their first two possessions. They never trailed. Junior wide receiver Baron Marshall opened the scoring with a touchdown at the 9:40 mark of the first quarter, as first reported by BVNWnews. Senior running back Grayson Williams added another, and Blue Valley Northwest led 14-0 after one.
The second quarter belonged to the Huskies. Senior quarterback Aidan Ihm scored on a rushing touchdown, and senior defensive lineman Andrew Steenson recovered a fumble that set up another score, pushing the lead to 28-0. Marshall found the end zone again before halftime. Blue Valley West answered with two scores, but the Huskies took a 35-14 lead into the break.
"It's a team win. Quarterbacks give me the ball. [The] line has to block and others have to do their job," Marshall said.
Blue Valley West cut the deficit to 35-21 with a quick third-quarter score, but Marshall answered with his third touchdown of the game with under a minute left in the period. Each team scored twice in the fourth to set the 56-35 final.
The win improved Blue Valley Northwest to 3-1 after the Overland Park school opened its season with three straight road games. The Huskies lost to Blue Valley High in week one, then beat Olathe Northwest 40-34 and Blue Valley Southwest 42-24 before returning home. Olathe Northwest was last year's 6A state runner-up.
Twenty-two seniors were honored before kickoff alongside the annual Gold Out ceremony, which raises awareness for childhood and pediatric cancer research. Head coach Clint Rider said the return home meant a lot to his players, calling the chance to win in front of a big crowd on senior night "a special thing."
Marshall said the game served as a tribute to injured senior wide receiver Dylan Hotze, who has been out since week one. Junior quarterback Braxton Wagner said the team is fired up heading into its week five rivalry matchup against Blue Valley North.
