Kansas' inaugural girls flag football state championship kicks off at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Shawnee Mission South Stadium.

St. Thomas Aquinas (11-0) faces St. James Academy (11-1) for the title. The third-place game between Shawnee Mission West and Shawnee Mission South resumes at 6 p.m.

All four teams are from Johnson County.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) announced on X that the remaining games were rescheduled for Wednesday at Shawnee Mission South. The games were originally set for the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, where a truck drove onto an adjacent youth soccer field Oct. 17, killing two people and injuring 11 others, according to KMBC.

As we reported Oct. 18, Shawnee Mission West and Shawnee Mission South were playing on a field adjacent to the crash when it happened. St. Thomas Aquinas and St. James Academy were waiting to play the championship.

The four teams reached the final round after semifinal play earlier on Oct. 17. St. Thomas Aquinas defeated Shawnee Mission West 47-20, and St. James Academy beat Shawnee Mission South 20-7, the Wichita Eagle reported.

Teams regroup after Wichita crash

The crash shook players and families across all four programs. Jeremy Holaday, KSHSAA assistant executive director, told FOX4 in an Oct. 19 interview that the championship-bound teams "were probably bystanders of the event and potentially witnessed some things that they'll certainly remember forever."

St. James Academy President Andy Tylicki told FOX4 that his players witnessed part of the crash. He said the St. James and St. Thomas Aquinas players prayed together at the complex while emergency crews worked.

"A number of our girls reached out to some of the little soccer players from that field … and tried to console some young soccer kids as well," Tylicki told FOX4.

St. James head coach Matt Hightower told KCTV5 the decision to practice was left to the players.

First season nears its end

This is the first year girls flag football has been a KSHSAA-sanctioned sport. The association's board approved it in April 2026 by a 61-1 vote, making Kansas the 18th state to sanction it, according to KCTV5. More than 50 teams competed statewide this season.

The Kansas City Chiefs are the presenting sponsor of the state championship, according to the team's website.

Wednesday's championship game at Shawnee Mission South Stadium is set for 7:15 p.m., following the 6 p.m. third-place game.
