The inaugural Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) girls flag football state championship game will be played Wednesday, Oct. 21, at SM South Stadium, the association announced Monday, Oct. 19.
St. James Academy and St. Thomas Aquinas will face off for the title at 7:15 p.m. The third-place game between Shawnee Mission South and Shawnee Mission West will resume at 6 p.m.
The third-place game was suspended and the championship postponed Saturday after a truck drove onto adjacent youth soccer fields, killing two people and injuring others. Six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both of McPherson, Kansas, died in the crash, according to KCTV5. Wichita police said the 34-year-old driver was released pending toxicology and mechanical tests. No charges have been filed.
All four teams in the final rounds are Johnson County schools. As we previously reported, SM West and SM South players were on an adjacent field, separated by fencing and a gate, when the crash occurred. Their third-place game was suspended at halftime. The championship game between St. James Academy and St. Thomas Aquinas had not yet started.
KSHSAA assistant executive director Jeremy Holaday told FOX4 the two championship teams were waiting to play when the crash happened. "They were probably bystanders of the event and potentially witnessed some things that they'll certainly remember forever," Holaday said in a Monday interview with the station.
St. James Academy President Andy Tylicki told FOX4 the St. James and Aquinas players prayed together at the complex as emergency crews worked Saturday. About 100 people attended a student-led rosary at the St. James chapel Sunday evening, Oct. 18, according to FOX4.
St. James flag football coach Matt Hightower said the team returned to practice Monday morning, Oct. 19, according to KCTV5. He left the decision to the players.
The KSHSAA board voted 61-1 in April 2026 to sanction girls flag football, making Kansas the 18th state to do so, according to Yahoo Sports. Twenty-eight Kansas high schools piloted programs last year, averaging 24 athletes per roster.
In the semifinals Saturday, St. Thomas Aquinas beat Shawnee Mission West 47-20 and St. James Academy beat Shawnee Mission South 20-7.
Wednesday's games at SM South Stadium: third-place game at 6 p.m., championship at 7:15 p.m.
