Shawnee Mission West and SM South flag football players were playing on an adjacent field Saturday, Oct. 17, when a pickup truck drove through a youth soccer game in Wichita. The crash at Stryker Sports Complex killed a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man.
All Shawnee Mission School District students, staff and families were unharmed, district spokesperson Jake Potter confirmed to the Johnson County Post.
The two SM schools were playing the third-place game in the inaugural Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) girls flag football state championship. The truck struck people on a soccer field separated from the flag football competition by fencing and a gated entrance, Potter said.
Emergency dispatchers began receiving 911 calls about 3:25 p.m., Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said at a press conference. The two people killed were both from McPherson, Kansas, and were not related, according to police.
Eleven other people were taken to hospitals. Ten had traumatic but non-life-threatening injuries, Moses said. Five children, ages 5 to 9, were among the injured.
A 61-year-old woman was hospitalized for non-traumatic medical issues.
Police announced Sunday, Oct. 18, that the driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas, had been released pending toxicology testing and a mechanical examination of the pickup. No charges had been filed. The two juveniles inside were her children, police said, according to KCTV5.
Police said the woman had a valid driver's license. Whether the crash was intentional remained unclear as of Saturday evening, NBC News reported.
Games suspended
The third-place game between SM West and SM South was halted at halftime with SM West leading 24-6, the Wichita Eagle reported. The championship game between St. Thomas Aquinas and St. James Academy had not yet started.
Earlier that day, St. Thomas Aquinas defeated SM West 47-20 in one semifinal. St. James Academy beat SM South 20-7 in the other.
Four Johnson County teams had traveled to Wichita for the final rounds of the state's first sanctioned girls flag football championship. KSHSAA suspended the remaining games and said rescheduling details would be announced Monday, Oct. 19.
"Given the nature of the emergency, we felt it was best to suspend the flag football third place and championship games until a later date," KSHSAA said in a statement.
Kansas Highway Patrol and Wichita police directed athletes, coaches and spectators off the property. The city of Wichita canceled all events at Stryker Sports Complex until further notice.
Wichita police asked anyone with video of the incident to submit footage to investigators. Police had conducted more than 30 interviews with witnesses by Saturday evening, according to the Salina Post.
