Robinson told the Post on election night that he was comfortable declaring victory.

"I appreciate the trust that voters have put in me to lead the city for the next four years," Robinson said, according to the Post. "I know that it was not a decision that voters took lightly."

Selders conceded in a text message to the Post. "While tonight's results are not what we hoped for, I want to extend my congratulations to Cole on his victory," she said.

A city looking for calm

The result caps a stretch of contentious Prairie Village politics. Housing recommendations in 2022 sparked the formation of PV United, a grassroots group that opposed the proposals and later circulated petitions seeking to limit rezoning authority and reshape the city's government.

In 2025, six council seats were on the ballot alongside a question asking whether the city should "abandon" its form of government. All six candidates who opposed the petition won, and voters rejected the "abandon" question by nearly 30 percentage points, according to the Post's earlier coverage.

Robinson, who won his own council reelection in that 2025 cycle, told the Post he sees the mayoral result as a continuation of that outcome.

"I think it's a reaffirmation of the sweep that we saw last year, and the rejection of abandoning the government," he said, according to the Post. "It shows that the city wants to move on from that."

Endorsements and alliances

Robinson entered the race with broad establishment support. Nine of 12 current Prairie Village councilmembers endorsed him, along with Mikkelson and former mayors, according to the Post. Selders drew support from residents aligned with PV United, though the group did not make an official endorsement.

Robinson has represented Ward 1 on the council since 2021 and serves as council president. Selders has represented Ward 2 since 2019.

Mikkelson first won the mayor's office in 2018 and ran unopposed in 2022. He announced earlier this year that he would not seek a third term.

What's next

All results remain unofficial until the Johnson County Board of County Canvassers meets Nov. 13 at the Johnson County Election Office in Olathe to certify the vote, according to county election records. The county reported 62% overall turnout, with 297,292 ballots cast countywide, according to the Johnson County Post's results page.
