Prairie Village plans Hispanic Heritage Month celebration Sept. 19

Prairie Village will host La Nuestra Comunidad, a free celebration of Hispanic heritage, at Harmon Park on Sept. 19 starting at 4 p.m.

The event name translates to "Our Community." The city's announcement describes it as an afternoon and evening gathering meant to bring neighbors together around the cultures and traditions represented in Prairie Village. Admission is free and the event is open to all residents.

The celebration falls during National Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. The observance began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson and expanded to a full month under President Ronald Reagan in 1988. This year's national theme is "Unidos, Somos Más," or "Together, We Are More."

The city said the gathering will feature community activities and family entertainment but has not yet announced specific performers, food vendors or a detailed schedule.

The Prairie Village Diversity Committee organized the event. The committee started as a city task force in 2020 and became an official committee in 2021. Ron Nelson chairs the group, with Shelby Bartelt serving as vice chair, according to the city's website. Mayor Eric Mikkelson has said the committee's mission covers diversity of race, religion, sexual orientation, national origin and other areas. The group plans community events throughout the year and meets on the second Tuesday of each month.
