Shawnee Mission South's boys varsity soccer team beat rival Shawnee Mission East 2-0 on Sept. 15, winning for the first time in 15 years against the Lancers.
Senior Owen Jungk scored both goals. He found the net 10 minutes in to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead, then added a second 22 minutes later to double the advantage before halftime.
"That second one was awesome," Jungk said, according to The Patriot, SM South's student paper. "Just feeling the atmosphere and how excited everyone was."
The game took an unusual turn four minutes into the second half. A storm rolled in and forced a lightning delay under Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) guidelines. Those guidelines call for an immediate 30-minute suspension of play when lightning is spotted, at least 30 minutes after the last thunder or lightning strike, with the clock resetting after any subsequent flash.
The Raiders sat in the locker room for 45 minutes. Captain Ben Nylund said the team stayed locked in despite being short a player. The entire squad packed the room, including JV players, all aware of what was at stake.
Goalie Mack Zahabi said the tension broke the moment head coach Kameron Ozburn walked through the door.
"… That's a win. Boom, everybody was yelling," Zahabi said. "Everybody's got their phones out recording. It was just surreal."
Under KSHSAA rules, the head referee shall declare a game official once one complete half has been played. Because the teams had finished the first half, the match was called and SM South's 2-0 lead became the final score. KSHSAA guidelines also recommend considering resumption at a later date when a delay reaches 45 minutes or longer, but in this case the result stood.
The win marked the first time SM South had beaten SM East in boys soccer in 15 years, The Patriot reported. KSHSAA's boys soccer regional tournaments for the 2026-27 season are scheduled to begin Oct. 26.
