A Lee's Summit, Missouri, woman died in a four-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 435 in Overland Park.

Her vehicle crossed a gore area and struck a crash attenuator near the US-69 interchange, setting off a multi-vehicle collision on Aug. 28.

Overland Park police identified the woman as Cynthia Aziere in a news release Monday, Aug. 31. Officer John Lacy, a department spokesperson, said the crash happened near the US-69 interchange, just west of Antioch Road, at about 8:37 p.m.

According to Lacy, Aziere's vehicle was heading westbound on I-435 and attempted to exit onto the US-69 interchange. The vehicle crossed through the gore area, the space where the highway and the exit ramp split apart. It then struck the crash attenuator, a barrier that absorbs impact and reduces crash damage.

Three more vehicles became involved after that initial impact.

Eight people total were in the four vehicles. Aziere died at an area hospital. Lacy said five other people were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Four of those people are believed to have suffered broken ribs. KSHB reported that two others were evaluated and released at the scene.

The crash also caused a secondary collision. As police, firefighters and paramedics responded to the initial wreck, a separate two-vehicle crash occurred at about 8:58 p.m. on westbound I-435 near the Antioch Bridge as traffic backed up. Ambulances transported five people to local hospitals from both Friday night crashes. All other injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

The Overland Park Police Department's Traffic Unit continues to investigate. No timeline for completing the investigation has been released.
