Johnson County residents have until Oct. 13 to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election, a ballot that spans races for U.S. Senate, governor and county commissioner.

The deadline applies across the county, including Overland Park, Leawood, Prairie Village, Mission and Merriam. After Oct. 13, the county's registration books close under Kansas law and unregistered residents cannot cast a ballot.

The deadline is firm.

The Johnson County Election Office allows residents to register online at jocoelection.org, or they can mail, email, text or hand-deliver an application to the office at 2101 E. Kansas City Road in Olathe. Registration forms can also be emailed to [email protected] or texted to (913) 953-9539.

The Election Office posted on its Facebook page on National Voter Registration Day, Sept. 15, that the Oct. 13 cutoff applies to the November general election. Blue Valley Schools shared the same information on X, directing families to jocoelection.org to verify their registration, view sample ballots and find polling locations.

What's on the ballot

The November ballot in Johnson County includes contests for U.S. Senate, U.S. House District 3, governor and lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, state treasurer and commissioner of insurance. Voters will also weigh in on State Board of Education District 3, Kansas Supreme Court justices, Kansas Court of Appeals judges and 10th Judicial District judges.

Local races include Johnson County Commission chair, County Commission Districts 1, 4 and 5, Prairie Village mayor and township clerk positions.

Advance voting options

Residents who register by the deadline have several ways to vote before Election Day. Advance mail ballots begin going out Oct. 14, according to the Election Office's election calendar.

In-person advance voting runs from Oct. 17 through Nov. 2 at noon. Hours and additional satellite locations are listed at jocoelection.org.

The Board of County Canvassers is scheduled to certify official results on Nov. 13 at 9 a.m. at the Election Office.
