Johnson County seeks board volunteers at Sept. 23 event

Johnson County residents who want a say in local policy can explore openings on more than 30 county advisory boards at a free event Sept. 23 in Overland Park.

The county's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coalition will host "A Seat at the Table: Discover Opportunities to Serve and Shape Johnson County" from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, in the Carmack Room at Central Resource Library, 9875 W. 87th St. Attendees can learn about board and commission roles, find one that fits their interests and get information on how to apply, according to a Johnson County news release.

The county maintains more than 30 boards, commissions and task forces that advise elected leaders on topics including zoning, public safety, parks, mental health and aging services. Some are required by state law. Others are created by the Board of County Commissioners.

Seats are open now.

As of Sept. 9, the county's boards and commissions portal listed vacancies on at least 18 bodies. Those include the Airport Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Commission on Aging, Criminal Justice Advisory Council, Mental Health Advisory Board, Museum Advisory Council, Planning Commission, Community Corrections Advisory Board, Juvenile Corrections Advisory Board, Housing and Community Development Advisory Committee and the Investment Review Group.

The county described the event as an interactive session where residents can match their interests to a board and receive guidance on next steps toward public service.

All appointees must follow the county government's Code of Ethics under the Johnson County Home Rule Charter.

Residents who cannot attend the Sept. 23 event can browse current vacancies and download an application at boards.jocogov.org. Completed forms go to the Board of County Commissioners office, which can be reached at 913-715-0430.
