A motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries Sunday night, Sept. 27, after crashing into another vehicle on northbound Interstate 35 near Antioch Road in Overland Park.
The crash happened shortly before 9 p.m. just north of the Antioch bridge, according to the Shawnee Mission Post, which had a reporter at the scene. Overland Park police said the motorcyclist was traveling northbound on I-35 when he struck another northbound vehicle, Fox 4 reported.
A witness said the motorcyclist had been driving erratically before the collision, Fox 4 reported.
Overland Park firefighters, Johnson County Med-Act paramedics and police officers from Overland Park and Merriam responded to the scene. A Shawnee Mission Post reporter observed the motorcycle lying on its side in the center lane of the highway. Multiple bystanders stopped to help the injured rider.
Police said the motorcyclist suffered life-threatening injuries. Paramedics transported the rider to a local hospital, according to Overland Park Police spokesperson Officer John Lacy. The driver of the other vehicle stayed at the scene. Police reported no other injuries, according to the Shawnee Mission Post.
The Overland Park Police Department posted on X that all northbound I-35 lanes were shut down at Antioch Road, with traffic diverted onto Antioch Road. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) assisted with the closure. The department asked drivers to avoid the area.
The shutdown lasted more than five hours overnight. Kansas City Scout traffic cameras showed the northbound lanes reopened around 2:20 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, though police remained in the right lane near the crash site. A tow truck removed the damaged motorcycle. All lanes fully reopened at 3:16 a.m., before the Monday morning commute.
The Overland Park Police Department's Traffic Unit is investigating the crash. The rider's name has not been released, and no charges or citations have been announced.
