Theatre in the Park opens "Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors" at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center's Black Box Theatre on Saturday, Oct. 3, with five actors, no musical numbers and one very confident vampire.

The 11-performance run stretches through Sunday, Oct. 18. Written by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen, the production is a comedy retelling of Bram Stoker's novel in which all the classic characters are played by a cast of just five, according to the Johnson County Post.

Only the actor playing Dracula stays in one role. The other four switch between servants, doctors, sailors and wolves, swapping costumes and accents throughout the roughly two-hour show.

"We have five actors, some costumes, a lot of confidence and very little shame," Tim Bair, Theatre in the Park's producing artistic director, wrote in a Sept. 16 Post column. "Watch this."

There is no singing or dancing.

Guy Gardner, the company's associate artistic director, is directing the production. Bair described the show as replacing musical elements with "absurdity."

Showtimes

Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3; Friday, Oct. 9; Saturday, Oct. 10; Thursday, Oct. 15; Friday, Oct. 16; and Saturday, Oct. 17.

Afternoon matinees start at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4; Sunday, Oct. 11; Saturday, Oct. 17; and Sunday, Oct. 18. Oct. 17 has both a matinee and an evening show.

A late-night performance is also scheduled for 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9.

Interpreters for the deaf and hard of hearing will be present at the 7:30 p.m. show on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Tickets and details

Evening tickets cost $20 for adults ages 11 to 59 and $18 for patrons 60 and older. Matinee tickets are 15% off those prices. All prices are before taxes and fees.

Seating is assigned at the time of purchase. The box office at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, opens at 6:30 p.m. on evening performance nights and 1 p.m. for matinees. Tickets are also available online through JCPRD.

Each show runs about two hours with one 15-minute intermission. Doors open 30 minutes before curtain.
