A high-speed lane change on southbound Interstate 35 sent two minivans off the highway Tuesday evening, injuring both drivers and backing up traffic near Overland Park.

The crash happened about 5:52 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, roughly 0.7 miles north of 87th Street, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol crash log. Charles Ray Brooks, 48, of Kansas City, Kansas, was driving a 2005 Honda Odyssey at a high rate of speed when he made an improper lane change and struck the rear of a 2013 Dodge Caravan, the log states.

The impact pushed both vehicles off the right side of the highway into the grassy area between I-35 and U.S. 69.

The Caravan's driver, Pamela Joy Ewan, 68, of Paola, Kansas, was also injured. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles and wearing seat belts, the crash log shows. Both sustained suspected minor injuries and were taken by Johnson County Med-Act ambulances to Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Overland Park firefighters and Med-Act paramedics responded to the scene. Lenexa police assisted with traffic control.

Southbound I-35 was reduced to two lanes for about 25 minutes. The backup stretched roughly two and a half miles north to Shawnee Mission Parkway, according to the Johnson County Post. All lanes reopened shortly after 7 p.m.

The crash log classifies the incident as an injury crash with no hit-and-run and no police pursuit. Both vehicles were removed by Simple Tow Service.

Recorded radio traffic indicated that troopers were investigating Brooks for possible signs of impairment, the Johnson County Post reported. No arrest or charges had been announced as of Wednesday, Sept. 23.
