Bishop Miege quarterback Landon Cole threw four touchdowns and ran for a fifth in a 48-19 win over Blue Valley on Saturday, Sept. 19. The performance put the 5-foot-8 signal-caller on a national stage.

NBC's Sunday Night Football featured Cole's game during the Kansas City Chiefs' 33-30 overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 21. The broadcast covers a local high school game in every city it visits, KSHB 41 reported, and the crew picked Cole's outing against the Tigers.

Cole was in the stands at Arrowhead Stadium when the segment aired during the third quarter. He told KSHB 41 his phone lit up the moment the Colts returned to the field after a Chiefs scoring drive.

"And my phone started blowing up," Cole said.

Against a Blue Valley squad that entered the game 2-1 and ranked No. 3 in Kansas Class 5A, Cole completed 19 of 25 passes for 346 yards. He added 44 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown on seven carries, according to Kansas Sports Central, which named him its Week 3 Player of the Week. KSHB 41 and Hy-Vee also named Cole their Athlete of the Week.

Cole told KSHB 41 he uses questions about his size as fuel. He said opposing fans call him short before games, but the talk tends to stop after he plays.

The win pushed Bishop Miege to 3-0 and kept the Stags at No. 1 in the Wichita Eagle's Kansas Class 4A rankings. On3's statewide rankings moved the Stags from No. 5 to No. 3 across all classes. Blue Valley fell to No. 5 in Class 5A after the loss.

Bishop Miege returned all 11 offensive starters from last season. Head coach Jon Holmes told KSHB 41 he has watched Cole develop since the quarterback attended St. Agnes in fifth grade, calling him "the best at their level every single year."

Holmes said the returning experience shows in how the Stags carry themselves, even during warmups. Three weeks in, he said, the bright lights have not been a problem.

Bishop Miege faces Blue Valley Southwest, which is 0-3, in Week 4. Blue Valley hosts Blue Valley North, which is 1-2.
