Leawood is replacing its last high-pressure sodium streetlights with LEDs, finishing a roughly 1,000-fixture upgrade the city said has taken about 10 years.
The remaining fixtures will be converted between fall 2026 and February 2027, according to a city alert posted July 1 on leawood.org. The city said the new lights will provide broader, more uniform roadway lighting while using less electricity and requiring less maintenance.
The city confirmed in a Facebook post on Thursday, Sept. 24, that the final phase is underway. The post said the LEDs use significantly less electricity than the sodium lights they replace, reducing energy consumption and cutting long-term operating costs.
A conversion map dated June 29 breaks the project into three categories: completed LED areas, upcoming LED work and streets not converting. Streets in that last group are private roads or decorative-fixture streets maintained by homeowners associations.
What residents will see
The city gave two reference points for what the finished lights will look like.
North of I-435, the new fixtures will match the style already installed along the High Drive cul-de-sac north of 97th Street. South of I-435, residents can look at the Regents Park Villas area south of 137th Street on Pembroke Lane for a preview.
The map covers major corridors across the city, including 83rd Street, 95th Street, College Boulevard, 119th Street, 135th Street, Mission Road, Nall Avenue and State Line Road.
Energy savings without a price tag
Leawood has not published a specific dollar figure for the projected savings. The city said the LED fixtures will lower long-term maintenance and operating costs and reduce energy consumption.
The city also said the new lights minimize unwanted light spill into nearby properties.
No timeline details beyond February
The city has not identified a contractor, a specific budget line item or a council vote tied to this final phase. No follow-up meeting or milestone date has been announced beyond the February 2027 completion target.
