Johnson County voters had cast 92,646 ballots as of Saturday, Oct. 24, following the first seven days of early in-person voting for the Nov. 3 general election, according to the Johnson County Election Office.

The total includes 77,937 early in-person votes and 14,709 advance mail ballots, representing 19.4% turnout among 477,848 registered voters, according to KCTV5.

The in-person pace is running well ahead of the 2022 midterm but behind the 2024 presidential election. The election office compared in-person totals at the same point in prior general elections: 77,937 in 2026 versus 104,214 in 2024. The office's comparison also showed the 2026 count significantly outpacing the 2022 midterm.

Johnson County Election Commissioner Connie Schmidt told KMBC on Oct. 21 that her office projected it could reach 155,000 in-person voters by the close of early voting. Combined with mail ballots, she said the county could approach 200,000 voters before Election Day.

Schmidt attributed the surge to competitive statewide races. "We have a high-profile U.S. Senate race, and we have an open governor's seat and secretary of state," she told KMBC. "So, a lot of seats are open, and we have a lot of interest in people voting."

The election office also reported it sent 33,754 mail ballots, with 43.58% returned. The office is urging mail voters not to mail ballots at this point. Instead, voters can return them to any early voting site during voting hours, any Election Day polling place or a 24-hour drop box by 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Where to vote early in the Overland Park area

Three of the county's 12 early voting sites are in Overland Park, with a fourth in Mission:

  • Arts and Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park
  • Hilltop Conference Center Blue Valley, 7700 W. 143rd St., Overland Park
  • Overland Park Arboretum Longhouse, 9209 W. 179th St., Overland Park

Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Saturday, Oct. 31. On Monday, Nov. 2, all 12 sites will be open 8 a.m. to noon. Voting does not take place on Sundays.

Any registered Johnson County voter may vote at any early location with a valid government-issued photo ID, the election office said. On Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 3, voters must go to their assigned polling place.
