Blue Valley Northwest beat Spring Hill in the program's first varsity girls flag football game. Rain and lightning forced officials to split the contest across two days, but the Huskies came away with a 31-20 victory, BVNWnews reported.

The Huskies hosted the Broncos at the District Activity Complex on Tuesday, Sept. 15, according to BVNWnews. Storms interrupted the action after the first half, and officials pushed the remainder to Wednesday, Sept. 16, when BV Northwest pulled away for the win.

Junior Ella Rost scored on one of the team's first drives Tuesday, becoming the first player to record a touchdown in BV Northwest girls flag football history. Both teams put points on the board during a rain-soaked first half before the delay.

The overnight break helped. Rost said a coach showed the team defensive film between halves, and the review helped them correct mistakes before play resumed.

"This was the first game, we were excited and nervous," Rost told BVNWnews. "But I think once we got into the game and we started making good plays, everyone was like, 'all right we got this.'"

Head coach Jeff Piggie said the game plan stayed the same despite the split schedule. He said the team watched film on Spring Hill, adjusted and stuck with the approach they had prepared.

The second half Wednesday featured touchdowns from both sides, but the Huskies built a lead they would not surrender.

The game is part of the first sanctioned season of girls flag football in Kansas. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) voted 61-1 in April to make it an official sport, according to Yahoo Sports. Kansas became the 18th state to sanction the sport. The season includes six to 10 regular-season games per team, according to the Kansas City Chiefs' website.

Shawnee Mission Northwest also celebrated a milestone this week, scoring its first touchdown in program history on the same day BV Northwest opened its season.

Piggie told the student newspaper he is glad to see the sport take hold, saying a lot of girls play flag football and the game is growing.

The Huskies' next scheduled opponent is Blue Valley North. That game was postponed because of weather, and a makeup date had not been announced as of Wednesday.
