BV Northwest tops ranked Olathe Northwest 40-34 in Week 2

Blue Valley Northwest beat Olathe Northwest 40-34 on Sept. 10, picking up its first win of the season in a high-scoring clash between ranked teams.

The Huskies are now 1-1. They entered the game 0-1 after a 51-24 loss to Blue Valley in the Week 1 opener, according to the Kansas City Star. Olathe Northwest, ranked No. 16 in Kansas by On3's Massey Ratings entering the week, came in 1-0 after a 27-0 shutout of Olathe South.

MaxPreps had ranked Blue Valley Northwest No. 15 in its Kansas computer rankings entering the week. The Ravens reached the Kansas 6A state championship game in 2025, finishing 9-4, according to the Kansas City Chiefs' coach of the week announcement.

Olathe Northwest head coach Lorne Clark, named the Chiefs' Kansas coach of the week on Sept. 10 for his team's Week 1 shutout, said of that opener: "Our kids competed well … with our defense getting a shutout, offense having some bright moments, and our kicker making a 54-yard field goal to cap off the night."

Clark is in his fifth season leading the Ravens.

More Thursday results

Three other local teams also played Thursday. Blue Valley beat Olathe West 38-14, improving to 2-0 after topping Blue Valley Northwest 51-24 in Week 1. Blue Valley West fell to Lawrence Free State 38-20, dropping to 0-2.

The toughest result belonged to Shawnee Mission East. Rockhurst shut out the Lancers 34-0, according to KCTV5's Friday Night Blitz scoreboard and confirmed by MaxPreps. SM East had opened the season with a 42-28 win over Olathe North and entered the week ranked No. 25 in Kansas by On3. Running back Rory Capstack ranked 18th in Kansas with 150 rushing yards in that opener, and Gus Ketteler ranked 23rd with 138 yards, according to MaxPreps.

Friday's slate

Six more area teams take the field Sept. 11. Shawnee Mission North faces Sumner Academy after opening with a 24-6 win over Olathe East. Blue Valley North, whose junior quarterback Ethan O'Hara led Kansas with 287 passing yards through Week 1 according to MaxPreps, meets Olathe North.

Shawnee Mission West plays Pittsburg after a 37-13 loss to Lawrence Free State in Week 1. Blue Valley Southwest faces St. James Academy following a 31-10 loss to Blue Valley North. Shawnee Mission South takes on Lincoln Prep after falling 52-14 to Olathe West. Shawnee Mission Northwest draws Raymore-Peculiar in an interstate matchup.
