Blue Valley Northwest built a 20-6 first-quarter lead over rival Blue Valley North on Oct. 2, then watched it vanish in a 55-34 loss at the District Activity Complex.

The defeat dropped the Huskies to 4-2. For Blue Valley North, the 55 points marked the Mustangs' highest-scoring game of the 2026 season and snapped a two-game losing streak, improving their record to 2-3, according to the Kansas City Chiefs' Coach of the Week announcement.

BVNW scored three first-quarter touchdowns to seize the early advantage. The Mustangs answered with 21 unanswered points in the second quarter, taking a 27-20 halftime lead. Blue Valley North then outscored the Huskies 14-0 in the third quarter, stretching the margin to 41-20 entering the fourth, the school's student newspaper reported.

Head coach Clint Rider said the team squandered chances when it mattered most.

"We had big plays and they got called back," Rider said.

Senior wide receiver Grayson Williams said the Huskies let mistakes compound. After one bad play, Williams said, the errors spiraled and the team lost its will to compete. Both teams scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, but the deficit was too large for BVNW to overcome.

BV North coach named Chiefs Coach of the Week

Blue Valley North head coach Blake Mudd, in his second season leading the program, was named a Kansas City Chiefs Week 5 High School Coach of the Week on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The honor came with a $1,000 grant from the Hunt Family Foundation.

Mudd was named the Mustangs' full-time head coach on Dec. 9, 2025, after serving as interim head coach that season. He called the rivalry win "a hard-fought victory" and said he was proud of his players' commitment.

Huskies bounce back in overtime

BVNW responded with a 43-42 overtime victory over St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, Oct. 9, according to Kansas City Star scores. The win moved the Huskies to 4-2 heading into Week 7.
